EXPERTISE FOR POLICY DEVELOPMENT
TASK FORCES
CEF wishes to examine and formulate a policy position on the following 4 issues by setting up small groups to operate as part of a task force / think tank to advise the Forum who would then promulgate and publicise an adopted policy. The focus would be directed towards the relevant public representatives and administration departments at the highest possible level. Local consumers would also be engaged so that they may be informed of the Forum's considered position and bring their own pressure to bear on the administration as appropriate.

Expressions of interest should be sent to admin@cef.ie by Monday 17th October 2005.

1. Energy
In spite of the ever stronger and clearer indications of a rise in fossil fuel prices well over and above normal inflationary adjustments, it is extraordinary that so many people can still be in denial of an ultimate shortage. That such individuals can occupy key positions and fail to act appropriately is hard to accept. The following are key areas where pro-active measures will undoubtedly yield positive results.
a). Potential for economies to be life-style enhancing & offer economic benefits
b). The alternatives & potential for renewables
c). Pro-active planning measures to support energy efficient design of future housing stock etc.

2 Refuse Reduction & Management
a). Viable public policies need to formulated which lead to the economic elimination of specific non-recyclable garbage streams at source
b). Waste is NOT inevitable, scope & potential exists for Government incentives for best practice
c). Product & process re-design for the elimination of waste as part of government policy
d). The issues around incineration

3. The Mandate & Function of the EPA
Recent evidence of chemical spillages in Cork Harbour and delays in reporting and seeming lack of remedial measures indicates in practical terms a failure to protect the environment. This is clearly an unsatisfactory situation which needs to be examined objectively.

4. Water Fluoridation
Ireland, the UK and Spain are the only European Countries still fluoridating tap water. The alternatives adopted in other countries suggests our position should be scientifically reviewed.

DEVELOPMENT OF CEF POSITION PAPERS
CEF has a series of position papers on a number of key environmental topics. Some are due for review, other new ones need to be developed. An index and the contents of current position papers is carried on this website. If you can offer expertise or advice in any of the topics covered or proposed or wish to comment on the individual position papers or would like to participate in the development of new position papers please contact us at info@cef.ie

The following new Position Papers have been proposed for development during 2005/6:
Noise
Environmental Education

General Active Skills - Locally based - Support needed.
On an occasional basis we need help with local tree planting events, action on waste/market surveys, school talks, Car Free Day bike ride etc. Active practical support needed.
